“A Small Name” Poem
Dear little family,
Along with our tiny size and pearl of a country, we share one thing. Our name.
Our family name is Touch.
Here in the U.S, that means “to make physical contact.”
That’s just not a cool last name.
In Cambodian, it’s not any better.
In Cambodian, it means small. Which is not cool at all.
A last name is supposed to show a legacy in a family.
But even then, coming from a poor socio economic background, that name, Touch, is still an attempt to symbolize our kin.
We didn’t choose this small life or this small name.
But I didn’t let the name shape me and I won’t ever let it shape any of you all.
I don’t want to grow up in the cycle of where our family is.
I want to be big.
That is why I stand on the hardships of your shoulders, to create an even bigger entity.
That’s what led me here.
To be the first of 6 siblings, in a 4 year college,
I Lead the Pack, with the deceptive name, meaning small.
